My  Sculpture  Gallery

First... My Artist's Statement
“Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep."

Although I have spent my professional career as a Scientist and Physiology Professor in several Universities, I have
always had a strong interest in the arts. Now, in retirement here on the coast of Maine, I have been free to pursue
this long-time passion, as a sculptor.  After several workshops and classes, I have begun to develop a direction
 and focus for my work...

Sculptural interpretation of biological forms, from realism to stylized expression.

I work entirely in natural earth clays, and try not to obscure the form of a piece with complex coloring or glazes.
Most recently, I have been working in Terracotta and Porcelain Clay, which I find are ideal for my figurative work.

When I'm not doing my figurative work, I have fun doing more Whimsical Ceramics

PROCESSION TO LLASA:  A group of seven Tibetan Buddhists take part in a procession, walking to the holy city of Llasa.
Periodically, they assume prayerful poses, saluting the sky, the heart, the earth, and finally the Dali Lama. As they walk,
they work to attain a higher level of spirituality, indicated by their color changing from dark to light.

The sculpture is made up of hi-fired clay figures, accented with variations of iron oxide, and mounted on a
rough wood slab, with stones.      43" long X 10" deep X 17" high, completed  2008

Sculpted from a live model in Hi-Fired Terracotta Clay, with Dark Iron Oxide stain, 10" tall.

THE HAPPY BUDDHA: This is my impression of what a Buddha should look like. I don't know how he
maintains this physique begging for food with a tiny bowl. I guess it all depends on your good attitude, compassion,
and
loving kindness. High-Fired Porcelain clay, with acrylic highlights on the robe. He sits about a foot tall.  completed 2010

WORKING HANDS: A series of life-size "self portraits", done in a variety of poses. Each pose has an
Italian name
(from L to R, "Il Cielo", "Tre", "Veni Qui", "Bellisima", "Potere", and "La Terra")  completed 2011

BROKEN:   Terracotta clay, wire and raffia, accented with
iron-oxide stains. 10" tall, completed June, 2008

ABANDONED:
Reclining Woman on bed, made from terracotta clay, accented with stains,
holding cast bronze rose. 14" long X 8" deep X 6" high, completed 2008

"The Mermaid"

My own idea of what a mermaid should look like, in repose, on the shore. She's an evolutionarily advanced
mermaid, with separated legs, which makes reproduction a whole lot easier (and more fun). She's made from

Terracotta Clay, is about a foot long, fired to a bisque stage, then stained, and re-fired. completed 2008

"The Magus"

An ancient Indo-European Shaman/Mystic. He's about a foot tall (1/4 scale),
He's made from fired Terracotta Clay, accented with an iron oxide stain. completed 2007

"The Earth Goddess Series"

I was working on sculpting female faces, and exploring the myth
of "Gaia", the Earth Mother, when these gals just showed up. They are made
from Terracotta with accents of Iron Oxide stain, 6" - 10" tall. created 2

The heads are mounted on a wooden board. completed 2009
